My mother’s realization that she could no longer have children shocked her both psychologically and biologically. It has first made me aware of just how fragile human life is. I had my grandmother hold eggs firmly in her hands and as a means to represent how difficult it can be to let go of fertility and the impact it can have on a woman’s self-image. There is an uncanny resemblance between my grandmother and I. Her facial and bodily expressions disclose an ambivalence toward aging that we both share. Her listless stare reveals my own discomfort with the overwhelming uncertainty of the future. I highlighted the wrinkles and darkened the shadows on the skin to overemphasize the effects this process can have on a woman’s body.
